Genesis of American Guitar to be Explored in Metropolitan Museum’s New Exhibition

New York, New York - Thirty-five rare guitars that illustrate the early history of the instrument in America will go on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, beginning January 14.  Drawn from the Museum’s own holdings as well as from the Martin Guitar Museum in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and several private collections, Early American Guitars: The Instruments of C. F. Martin will trace the birth of the American guitar by shedding light on the contributions of Christian Frederick Martin, a German immigrant who invented a uniquely American form of the guitar in the first half of the 19th century.  The exhibition will highlight the largest collection of instruments by this renowned maker ever to be displayed publicly, including the earliest known guitar signed by Martin, the earliest established guitar with his famed X-braced construction, and several extraordinary decorated examples of his work.  Also on view will be a 1939 guitar made by Martin Guitar that was played by Eric Clapton on MTV’s Unplugged series in 1992, representing the long trajectory of guitar building by the company founded by Christian Frederick Martin.

John Mayer: Laurel Canyon

mayer onlyHidden away from the hustle and bustle of Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood is a tranquil, woodsy neighborhood called Laurel Canyon. This small community, where the homes literally cling to steep canyon walls, occupies a special place in American music history.

From the mid-'60s to the mid-'70s, the bands and artists living and working here crafted a sound that still resonates today. It's best described as a blend of folk, rock and pop mixed with bright California sunshine. Laurel Canyon was where Crosby, Stills and Nash first harmonized. It was where Joni Mitchell fused poetry and music. It was where the Mamas & the Papas moved folk closer to pop. James Taylor and Carole King helped the singer-songwriter movement take root in Laurel Canyon. Jim Morrison called the place home. So did Gram Parsons and Brian Wilson.

The distinctive music created by the cross-pollination of talent in Laurel Canyon continues to inspire. John Mayer, an artist who usually cites the electric blues as an influence, felt a deep connection to this special sound. He picks up where the legends of Laurel Canyon left off with his new album, Born and Raised. You'll hear a mix of styles and genres that evoke the sunny, laid-back rock of late-'60s Los Angeles.

John plays his Martin John Mayer 00-45SC, which brings the warm, sun-drenched melodies reminiscent of Laurel Canyon to life.

Dierks Bentley: Station Inn

db image

If you think of bluegrass as country music’s cousin from the mountains, it would only make sense that an artist like Dierks Bentley would love Nashville’s Station Inn.

The place is practically a shrine to bluegrass and its deep Appalachian roots. When you walk in, you’ll see boarded-up windows and mismatched chairs. You can take in a show in seats from Lester Flatt’s old tour bus.

But the music is amazing. All the bluegrass greats have played at the Station Inn. Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Del McCoury, The Sidemen, Alison Krauss and Union Station, plus countless other talented musicians, have played within the venue’s poster-filled walls. It’s a nightly celebration of country music’s bluegrass heritage.

So when 19-year-old Dierks Bentley walked into the Station Inn and first heard The Sidemen playing on the cramped stage, a love affair with bluegrass was ignited that continues today.

From his first recordings to his latest, Home, Dierks knits ancient and modern sounds that give the music a timeless quality. The songs he first heard at the Station Inn echo throughout his work.

Dierks’ custom acoustic guitar is a Martin Signature HD Dierks Bentley. It’s perfectly crafted for giving country music an earthy bluegrass flavor.
