Responsible Timber Purchasing Policy

  1. C. F. Martin & Co., Inc. Commitment to Responsible Forestry
    As a family owned company since 1833, C.F. Martin & Co., Inc. is proud to be an industry leader in its global commitment to responsible forestry and the use of renewable natural resources. The company actively recognizes that it has a responsibility to the environment, consumers, and staff to base its commercial activities on responsible stewardship of the world's forest resources.
  2. Management Support
    C.F. Martin & Co., Inc. has adopted requirements and appointed a wood management team to implement the company's purchasing policies, to train and assist coworkers on those policies, and to apprise suppliers and agents of those policies.
  3. Supplier Code of Conduct and Purchasing Protocol
    C.F. Martin & Co., Inc. is committed to responsible timber purchasing and has established a supplier code of conduct that includes monitoring suppliers, risk assessments of species and regions, continuous improvement of sourcing as well as considering opportunities with relevant stakeholders for improving conditions for transparency in the timber trade and sustainable forest management. Suppliers to the company must agree and adhere to our purchasing and disclosure requirements before and during active business engagement with our company.
  4. Supply Chain Monitoring
    C.F. Martin & Co., Inc. will perform periodic assessments on all suppliers with the goal of increasing due diligence and reducing the risks of procuring non-conforming products. The assessments will seek to provide the most up to date information regarding the sources of raw materials used in the manufacture of Martin products. The information gathered will allow Martin to make more informed and responsible purchasing decisions.
  5. Timber Legality and Regulatory Compliance
    C.F. Martin & Co., Inc. is committed to purchasing all timber from legal sources and will seek, obtain and maintain evidence from suppliers that they are complying with regulatory requirements in the countries where the wood was harvested, manufactured and shipped. Martin will also comply with applicable international agreements and the laws of the United States of America, in particular the Lacey Act. C.F. Martin & Co. steadfastly condemns illegal logging practices and will endeavor to stay informed of international developments and changes in legislation.
  6. Timber Certification
    C. F. Martin & Co., Inc. supports and directly participates in international efforts to improve forest management through independent certification systems that include third party verification. The company is committed to purchasing increasing volumes of timber products that are independently certified to credible standards for responsible forestry and recognizes and prefers the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) as the most rigorous of the available forestry standards.
  7. Endangered Species
    C.F. Martin & Co., Inc. adheres to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and is committed to sustainable use and the long-term viability of listed species and their habitats that are used in its products.
  8. Region Specific Partnerships
    When appropriate, the company is committed to participating in efforts to promote and increase economic opportunities for forest dependent people through sustainable management of forests and to decrease the use of timber species from regions proven to be of significant risk to the species.
  9. Continuous Improvement
    C.F. Martin & Co., Inc. is committed to continuously improving its sourcing and purchasing policy commitments through building the capacity of its staff and enhancing communications with its suppliers. The company is also committed to continuously improving production systems for increasing efficiency and reducing waste. This includes the introduction of alternative species and processes that reduce impacts on forests and natural systems.
  10. Reporting and Auditing
    C.F. Martin & Co., Inc. will conduct an annual audit and implement an internal reporting mechanism that will be used for assessing its responsible timber purchasing policy. This will include internal and external auditing to ensure compliance with its policies and procedures.
