About the Artists
In a career that has already spanned a half-century, Jorma Kaukonen - celebrating his 70th birthday on December 23 - is one of the most highly respected interpreters of American roots music, blues, and Americana, and at the forefront of popular rock-and-roll. Jorma was a founding member of two legendary bands, The Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna, a GRAMMY nominee and a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Jorma will be joined on stage by Barry Mitterhoff, an established mandolinist with both the progressive and avant-garde bluegrass movements. He's been a mainstay of such groups as Skyline, Silk City and Abaca String Band, has played the White House and is also noted for his work with Hot Tuna and with guitarist Peter Rowan.
Peter Rowan, the legendary bluegrass singer-songwriter, is a GRAMMY Award winner and five-time GRAMMY nominee. In his early years, Rowan founded the groundbreaking group SeaTrain, played under the tutelage of bluegrass patriarch Bill Monroe, and following his stint in Old & In the Way with Jerry Garcia he broke out as both a solo performer and bandleader.
Rowan will be performing alongside Tony Rice. The two helped to reinvent American roots music throughout their solo careers, and then teamed up to release 2004's You Were There For Me as a duo, and the recent Quartet alongside Bryn Davies and Sharon Gilchrist. One of the premier exponents of flat-picked acoustic guitar, Rice parlayed his initial inspiration from Clarence White and Doc Watson into a legacy of innovation. He has also performed with the Bluegrass Alliance and J.D. Crowe and the New South, and as a part of David Grisman's groundbreaking first quintet.
Woody Mann has been called " one of those names that should be uttered only in hushed tones" by The London Times which added, "you are unlikely to hear anything - or anyone - better." He was taught by the Rev Gary Davis, studied jazz under Lennie Tristano, and has played with Son House, Bukka White and John Fahey.
Heralded as "one of the greatest living acoustic blues artists" (Blues Revue), Rory Block has committed her life and her career to preserving the Delta blues tradition. A traditionalist and an innovator at the same time, she wields a fiery and haunting guitar and vocal style that redefines the boundaries of acoustic blues and folk. Plus, she has been recognized with W.C. Handy Awards four years in a row - two for Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year, and two for Best Acoustic Blues Album of the Year.
