Q: What is your must-have acoustic guitar accessory?

John Bohlinger

On acoustic, I really like thumbpicks. They really make the bottom end pop when you’re playing fingerstyle.

Elle Cordova

A clip-on tuner is the first thing that comes to mind. I have about a dozen of them at home and I always have one in my guitar case.

Sean Daniel

It’s gotta be a headstock tuner. I hear a lot of slander about the look of performing with a tuner attached to your headstock and I’m ready to fight over this. It’s convenient, usually backlit so you can see it in a dark room and they’re pretty inexpensive. I’ve heard the ludicrous take that if you’re using one, tune the guitar then put it in your pocket for a cleaner look. But then you have a tuner-sized bulge in your pocket? Get out of here.

Steve Howe

Tuner. Always tune first.

Jimmy Leslie

The one thing that must be available at all times is a string winder combo tool. In case I break a string, that one tool helps get me up and running ASAP.

Brooke Ligertwood

This is super basic, but I actually have fallen in love with clip-on soundhole tuners. Obviously if you’re recording or on stage you probably want to use a pedal tuner, but for everyday playing, the wee soundhole tuner does the trick beautifully.

Zach Meyers

Is it too apropos to say a capo? My favorite John Prine quote is that he only ever learned three chords, then he bought a capo and knew all the chords.

Steve Miller

Tuner.

Paul Riario

A must have accessory? I mean, c'mon, if you play acoustic often or in front of an audience, a capo is an absolute must. But the obvious answer is a tuner.

The capo I got 20 years ago when I started playing. It's still my go-to capo. It's the kind of thing you buy for life.

Mary Spender

The only must-have accessory you need as a songwriter is a good quality capo. I know I can play any song as long as I’ve got mine handy, so it comes with me everywhere.
