Meet the Martin 00-21 Gram Parsons: A Limited-Edition Tribute to a Country-Rock Pioneer
Limited to just 80 guitars, the new Martin 00-21 Gram Parsons recreates the character of his original 1963 Martin—honoring the country-rock pioneer on his 80th birthday and in the year of his 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction.
Some guitars become part of an artist’s sound.
Others become part of their story.
For Gram Parsons, one of those instruments was a well-loved 1963 Martin 00-21—a compact 12-fret acoustic that accompanied an artist whose influence would stretch far beyond his own lifetime.
Now Martin is honoring that connection with the 00-21 Gram Parsons, a limited-edition acoustic guitar inspired directly by Gram’s original instrument.
Launching on what would have been Parsons’ 80th birthday and limited to just 80 guitars, the new 00-21 arrives during another milestone year for his legacy: Parsons is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2026.
It’s fitting recognition for an artist whose blend of country, rock, folk, soul, and American roots music helped define what he famously called “Cosmic American Music.”
And this tribute starts with the Martin that was there with him.
Gram Parsons and His 1963 Martin 00-21
Gram Parsons never fit neatly into one musical category.
Through his work with The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, his solo recordings, and collaborations with artists including Emmylou Harris, Parsons helped blur the lines between country and rock at a time when those worlds often seemed much farther apart.
That influence continues to be heard across country, Americana, roots, and rock music today.
Among the instruments associated with that story was Gram’s 1963 Martin 00-21.
The original was a small-bodied, 12-fret acoustic with the understated look and distinctive proportions of Martin’s Style 21 instruments from the period. Years of use left it with honest playwear, character, and details that made it unmistakably his.
For the new 00-21 Gram Parsons, Martin went back to that guitar for inspiration—not simply to recreate a model number, but to capture the individual instrument Parsons actually played.
A Martin 00 12-Fret Built Around the Original
The foundation of the new guitar is a 00 12-fret body, meaning the neck joins the body at the 12th fret rather than the 14th fret found on many modern acoustic guitars.
That construction gives the guitar the distinctive proportions and feel associated with vintage Martin 00 12-fret instruments.
Its compact body makes it comfortable to hold, while the 12-fret design places the bridge differently on the top than on a comparable 14-fret guitar, contributing to the character players associate with this traditional format.
A 24.9-inch scale length adds to the comfortable feel, while the 1 7/8-inch nut width reflects the wider spacing found on Gram’s original guitar.
For players accustomed to narrower modern necks, that extra room provides a noticeably different experience—one that feels appropriate for an instrument rooted so closely in a 1963 Martin.
Old-Growth Sitka Spruce with VTS
At the heart of the 00-21 Gram Parsons is an old-growth Sitka spruce top treated with Martin’s Vintage Tone System® (VTS).
VTS uses a controlled aging process intended to recreate some of the characteristics associated with naturally aged wood, helping give the guitar a more open, seasoned response from the start.
The top is paired with East Indian rosewood back and sides, bringing the familiar depth, complexity, and richness associated with rosewood-bodied Martin acoustics.
Together, those materials give the 00-21 Gram Parsons a voice built to complement its vintage-inspired construction—not simply its appearance.
Recreating Decades of Visual Character
Gram’s original 00-21 didn’t spend its life untouched in a case.
It was played.
And it looked like it.
One of the most distinctive elements of the new 00-21 Gram Parsons is the way Martin has recreated the visual wear of his original 1963 guitar across the top.
Rather than presenting a perfectly pristine interpretation of an instrument that had clearly lived a musical life, the new model captures the markings and character that made Gram’s guitar unique.
An aging toner reinforces that naturally aged appearance, while the matched visual wear connects the new instrument directly to the guitar that inspired it.
The goal isn’t to make every old guitar look the same.
It’s to make this one look like Gram’s.
A Neck Inspired by Gram’s Original Martin
That attention to the original extends beyond the body.
The 00-21 Gram Parsons features a V-shaped neck profile with a 1963-inspired heel, combining vintage Martin design cues with details drawn specifically from Gram’s guitar.
The wider 1 7/8-inch nut gives the strings generous spacing, while the short 24.9-inch scale keeps the overall feel comfortable and relaxed.
Up top, a slotted headstock completes the traditional 12-fret look.
These aren’t simply decorative references.
They’re part of what makes the guitar feel different in the hands—and what connects it to the Martin instruments of the era that inspired it.
Why a 00-21?
The 00 has long occupied a distinctive place in Martin history.
Smaller than a 000 or OM and dramatically more compact than a Dreadnought, a 00 offers a comfortable playing experience with a focused, intimate acoustic voice.
Pair that body with a 12-fret neck joint, rosewood back and sides, and a traditional slotted headstock, and you get a format closely associated with some of Martin’s earliest steel-string designs.
That makes the 00-21 an especially fitting instrument through which to tell Gram Parsons’ story.
His music was never about sheer size or volume.
It was about songs, feel, texture, and finding connections between musical traditions that other people kept separate.
A small-bodied Martin with a voice all its own feels right at home in that story. Want to see how the 00 compares to other Martin shapes? Read our guide to acoustic guitar body sizes and shapes.
Limited to 80 Guitars
The Martin 00-21 Gram Parsons is limited to 80 instruments worldwide, a number chosen to mark what would have been Gram Parsons’ 80th birthday.
Inside each guitar is a special label featuring Parsons’ pre-printed signature, adding another direct connection to the artist and his legacy.
For collectors, Gram Parsons fans, vintage Martin enthusiasts, and players drawn to traditional 00 12-fret guitars, the limited production makes this an especially uncommon model within the Martin lineup.
From Cosmic American Music to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
Gram Parsons’ career was brief, but the musical territory he helped open up only grew wider after him.
His closest collaborator, Emmylou Harris, carried that spirit into an enormously influential career of her own. The Eagles helped bring country rock into the mainstream. Artists including Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Wilco—fronted by Martin Signature Artist Jeff Tweedy—Beck, Son Volt, and Ryan Adams would later explore their own versions of the space between country, rock, roots music, and Americana.
His friendship with the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards created another important connection between Parsons’ love of American country music and the wider rock world.
More than five decades later, that influence is still being recognized—including Parsons’ induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2026.
The 00-21 Gram Parsons looks backward closely enough to reproduce the honest playwear and character of one individual 1963 Martin. But like Parsons’ influence itself, it isn’t meant to stop there.
It was built to make new music.
With its 00 12-fret body, old-growth Sitka spruce VTS top, East Indian rosewood back and sides, vintage-inspired neck, slotted headstock, and unmistakable visual character, the Martin 00-21 Gram Parsons brings one piece of his musical history forward for another generation.
