String Theory with Doug Hream Blunt presented by Martin Guitar, Luaka Bop and Ace Hotel

String Theory with Doug Hream Blunt presented by Martin Guitar, Luaka Bop and Ace Hotel

On Tuesday, September 27, Doug Hream Blunt will be giving an evening performance at Ace Hotel New York with a band formed through community outreach with Brooklyn Music Factory and some special guests. With the band welcome to all musicians who are looking for a unique performance opportunity, anyone who wants to take part in this performance need only apply via a quick questionnaire at http://doughreamblunt.com/playwithdoug

The live performance will celebrate the spirit of community, education, and performance opportunities for all, as part of the String Theory series begun in June with Martin Guitar and Ace Hotel. The series will make two later stops this year, on November 5 at Ace Hotel New Orleans, and on December 4, at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles.

To continue this giving spirit, the members of the bands formed through community outreach in each city will collectively choose an organization that will receive the gift of a Martin guitar at the end of each performance. With these instruments, each organization will be able to continue practicing music therapy, music education, and adult education.

“I’ve never been to New York - I’m so excited!!” — Doug Hream Blunt

"Doug's open spirit and trust in collective, spontaneous endeavors has been a real motor in the shaping of the String Theory series. We are thrilled to be helping the local music communities as he embarks on his newest music adventure." — Kelly Sawdon, Partner and Chief Brand Officer, Ace Hotel

“We are incredibly psyched for Bella, Eoin, Grace and Jude of Clover & The Clockworks to be working with Doug and having the chance to perform at a venue as cool as the Ace Hotel. Wow!" — Nate Shaw, co-founder of Brooklyn Music Factory

About Doug Hream Blunt
Doug Hream Blunt learned to play music after taking a "how to start a band" class at age 35. He formed a band out of his classmates and would only perform at the hospital where he worked as a nurse. When he’d finish a new song and was able to get everyone together, he made a few rare appearances on the local San Francisco cable access television. He eventually recorded an album and EP of hypnotic lo-fi soul/pop at his teacher’s house, which has been recently excavated and reissued by the good souls at Luaka Bop. Today, at the age of 65, he has started to tour for the first ever in his life, and has become admired by fellow musicians like Ariel Pink, Jamie xx, Dam-Funk and Jamie Lidell. His music has been celebrated by Pitchfork, The Times, and The Guardian, among others.

About Luaka Bop
Founded by David Byrne in 1989, Luaka Bop has introduced Os Mutantes, Shuggie Otis, Tim Maia and William Onyeabor to the world at large, and become home to artists like Tom Ze, Floating Points, Cornershop, Zap Mama, and Janka Nabay among others. A few years ago, Luaka Bop reissued the music of William Onyeabor, which may have been the most complicated, if also one of the richest, undertakings in label’s (rarely straightforward) 26-year history. Since, they have put out two artists, whose background and music couldn’t be different from the next: Doug Hream Blunt, a nurse who learned to play music at the age of 35, and Floating Points, the musical genius that is Sam Shepherd, with a Ph.D. in neuroscience.

About Brooklyn Music Factory
Brooklyn Music Factory was founded in 2008 by two local musicians and parents. Based in the Gowanus neighborhood, BMF is more than a music school. It is a community of families who learn, play and enjoy music together. Today, more than 300 students come to BMF for private lessons, band classes, student gigs, a concert series, special workshops, and more.

About Ace Hotel
