New York, New York - Ace Hotel is thrilled to continue with the fourth year of our 5 at 5 series, a collaboration with Martin Guitar, in which we ask some of our favorite artists to take over the lobby of Ace Hotel Downtown LA or Ace Hotel New York. Heeding the call, they fill it with music—five beautiful songs at 5 PM.
On Monday, April 6, at Ace Hotel New York, 5 at 5 features West African trance rockers Tal National. The members of Tal National were reared in the multicultural climate of of West Africa, their formative years spent touring Saharan dirt pathways, selling CDs on Niamey street corners and honing their singular sound—a tangle of sparkly guitar rhythms, afro-beat exuberance and sharp, percussive beats. After decades spent garnering a formative local following, the band released 2013's Kaani to international acclaim, each track a blistering and energetic bugle call for peace. NPR were hit by “the band’s tightness and fiery energy”; The Guardian praised “their full-tilt approach, and hypnotic intensity”; while Songlines wrote of “a rich, hybrid sound that draws on familiar West African elements to create something rewardingly fresh and different”.
FatCat will release the dazzling follow-up, Zoy Zoy, on April 13th. Tal National's live shows are known to be raucous, five-hour affairs, so arrive early to get a spot. Free and open to all.
