Nazareth, PA – C.F. Martin & Co. hosted a special reception unveiling a mixed media mural, depicting the 182 year history of the C.F. Martin family and company, at the Martin Guitar Visitor Center on Thursday, October 29, 2015. The event, which showcased the beautiful work of artist Robert Goetzl, also included an opening address by Chris Martin IV, Chairman & CEO of Martin Guitar. Live musical performances by Martin Artist Craig Thatcher and Nyke Van Wyk added to the event’s festivities.
Goetzl, who is also part of the Martin lineage, was commissioned to create a visual representation of the brand over the years, starting with founder C.F. Martin in the early 1800s. “Very rarely does a project like this become an extremely personal endeavor,” says Goetzl. “I was blown away that I was entrusted to work on such a meaningful project for this flourishing company. It was surreal to be representing this family’s history through art and was such an honor to create.”
The mural consists of six 3-foot by 4-foot individual paintings that when put together tell the complete story of C.F. Martin & Co – from the early 1800s where a young C.F. Martin emigrated from Saxony, Germany to New York City where the first guitar store was born, all the way to the company’s current home in Nazareth, PA. To help conceptualize the project, Goetzl was given complete access to all of the Martin archives where he examined various keepsakes including receipts, work orders, ledger pages, letters, and sketches.
“We are proud to be in possession of one of Robert’s beautiful art installations, which pays homage to the proud history of C.F. Martin Guitar,” said Chairman & CEO Chris Martin IV. “The mural beautifully illustrates our company’s legacy – from my forefather’s humble beginnings to where we are now – for the thousands of Martin guitar enthusiasts we host every year.”
