Nazareth, PA (NAMM, Booth 902)– July 7, 2014 - C. F. Martin & Co. (www.martinguitar.com) will pay tribute to beloved gospel and country legends The Louvin Brothers when they unveil the new D-28 Louvin Brothers Custom Signature Edition at Summer NAMM 2014 in Nashville, July 17-19. It is the first guitar made by Martin that features a special photographic imprint on the solid Sitka spruce top, with a graphic inspired by the Louvin Brothers’ iconic album cover, “Satan is Real.”
“I have been interested in folk art for many years. I’m not sure why, but I’m intrigued by folk art that features the devil. You can imagine how intrigued I was last year when I saw the Louvin Brothers album cover on a T-shirt in Nashville. I had to get one. “, says Chris Martin IV, Chairman & CEO. “My friend Larry Barnwell sent me a copy of Charlie Louvin’s book. I’ve done some research on the Louvin Brothers and have a better appreciation of their devotion to authentic country music and in particular, their melodious harmonies. I’m really proud the family is allowing us to recreate their iconic album cover on this limited edition.”
Charlie and Ira Loudermilk were born in Alabama and took the stage name Louvin when they began recording music and performing on radio in the 1940s. They transcended genres, performing gospel, country, folk, hillbilly and 50s pop, and throughout the 50s and 60s, they recorded a number of hits, including “When I Stop Dreaming,” “Cash on the Barrel Head,” and “The Christian Life.” In 1959, The Louvin Brothers released “Satan Is Real,” a collection of gospel songs. The boldly colored album cover, designed by Ira, features Ira and Charlie standing in front of a hellish fire and brimstone backdrop, and a giant cutout figure of the Devil (made by the brothers themselves). Many consider it to be one of the greatest album covers of all time.
The D-28 Louvin Brothers Custom Signature Edition guitar was created in consultation with Charlie’s son, Ken Louvin. Based off a D-28 CFM 1955 model, the Dreadnought 14-fret body is constructed with solid East Indian rosewood and the modified low oval neck is mahogany. The tuners are nickel wafflebacks with oval knobs. The interior label of each guitar will be signed by CFM IV and numbered in sequence and only 50 of these limited-edition guitars will be made. MSRP: $4666.00
Martin will also unveil the CS-GP-14, a new Grand Performance 14-fret non-cutaway model built with complete hide glue construction. Both the rosette and fingerboard are inlaid with a concave diamond design made up of orange/red spiney reconstituted stone with solid mother of pearl. The certified European spruce top is torrefied and married with Guatemalan rosewood back and sides. The back also features a figured cocobolo wedge and the side sound port for the Fishman Aura VT electronics features a rosette ring. The mahogany neck with the performing artist profile has a carbon fiber neck rod. There will be a limited edition of 50 copies available. MSRP: $8,499.00
